Former president of Pakistan Muslim League USA Haji Mohammad Jameel passed away on March 8 at his home in New York.

For years, he spearheaded a consistent campaign to enlist members of Pakistani community into Mian Nawaz Sharif-lead Pakistan Muslim League. Haji Jameel was known for his straight forwardness and humbleness. He was well respected and was considered not just a leader of a political party but also a noted community elder.

His Namaz e  Janaz will be held at Makki Masjid on Coney Island Avenue in Brooklyn and will be laid to rest at a cemetery in New Jersey.

Veteran journalist Mohsin Zaheer broke the news of Haji Jameel’s passing on Facebook. Late Haji Jameel’s friends, supporters and party colleagues took to social media to pay tributes to his services both as a community and Muslim League leader.

“Haji Jameel was a founder member of PMLUSA, who nurtured, lead and mentored it in America for quarter of a century,” said Dr Mohammad Akram, a veteran Muslim Leaguer in a Facebook post. He added: “It’s so sad to loose such a dear member of our family. Unfortunately, today we lost history, along with all the memories of struggle for this organization. He will always be remembered not only a founding member of PML USA but also a brave leader who stood against the dictator at a time in our history when very few dared to take such a stand.”

Dr Akram remembered Haji Jameel as  a “nice friend, humble and caring person” who always was willing to help. “Our community lost a very thoughtful person,” he added.

Another prominent community activist Dr Ashraf Abbasi also remembered late Haji Jameel as “a very dear friend, a community icon and the most credible name in the PML-N ( USA).”
Dr Abbasi recalled that late Jameel was one of few friends who stayed in touch with him after the former moved to Pakistan. “I had the pleasure and privilege of hosting him quite a few times in Houston, Texas. His caring, sincerity, friendship and activism will be dearly missed by many, especially me. May Allah ( SWT) grant the parted soul maghfira and a conspicuous place in Janna. May He grant patience / Sabrun Jameel to his family and strength to sustain this irreparable loss with perseverance. Ameen !!!”
