A lake formed due to surging of the Khurdopin Glacier in Hunza’s Shimshal Valley is in ‘critical’ state, says a report prepared by the Aga Khan Agency for Habitat and GB Disaster Management Authority.

The glacial lake, formed due to expansion of the Khurdopin Glacier which has caused the blocking a small glacial river, is currently frozen, and there is no immediate threat of water relesae.

However, during the spring and/or summer a glacial lake outburst flood (GLOF) is possible, which can damage infrastructure and means of livelihood.

Preparations are afoot to handle any emergency situation.
