Senior journalist, analyst and author Imtiaz Gul visits Balochistan’s Panjgur and Turbat cities to find the reality of smuggling of petrol and diesel from Iran. Gul speaks to locals and reports that Iranian diesel smuggling is happening under a token system that is issued by the deputy commissioner’s office.
Pakistan’s Chief of the Army Staff General Asim Munir has promised to clamp down on smuggling from Pakistan’s porous borders with Iran and Afghanistan. General Munir leads the military that is responsible for securing the country’s borders. It is yet to be seen if the military is bringing any reform and accountability in-house to control the scourge of smuggling and corruption that costs Pakistan’s exchequer billions of rupees each year. However, locals tell Gul that smuggling of Iranian fuel is the lifeline for the area’s impoverished population.
